The Massachusetts State House was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon, lawmakers, employees and the public all rushed out by sounding alarms, when an electrical fire broke out in the basement. A POLITICO Magazine profile of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer offhandedly referred to Healey as one of a few new governors who might have eyes on a national post in 2028. When Healey recently took over a position helping to elect more women governors, NBC News described the role as "a national platform for one of the party's rising stars in state office." Democrats who control the House and Senate notched a few major accomplishments, including a tax relief law that lawmakers were unable to complete under former Gov. Charlie Baker and policy reforms in the state budget like funding free school meals for all students. Pressed on whether she would like to see something like the Common Start bill specifically emerge for a vote this session, Healey said only that she and lawmakers agree on the importance of addressing child care costs.

Other areas that Healey has identified as key, like housing production, are not exactly getting rapid responses. Today, the Biden-Harris Administration, through the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a Final Rule, entitled HIPAA Privacy Rule to Support Reproductive Health Care Privacy. HHS is issuing this Final Rule after hearing from communities that changes were needed to better protect patient confidentiality and prevent medical records from being used against people for providing or obtaining lawful reproductive health care. This Final Rule will bolster patient-provider confidentiality and help promote trust and open communication between individuals and their health care providers or health plans, which is essential for high-quality health care. Investigators connected Duran to the West Covina shooting after initially booking him as a suspected drunk driver, Luna said.
Healey's team could downgrade the consensus revenue forecast for FY24 to reflect the sluggish performance so far, and the governor suggested Wednesday that call will be up to her budget chief, Administration and Finance Secretary Matthew Gorzkowicz. While spending trends are not clear nearly midway through the budget year, tax collections have fallen short of projections five months in a row. Through the first five months of fiscal year 2024, state tax collectors have hauled in about $146 million or 1 percent more than they did during the same span last year, but $627 million or 4.3 percent less than the estimates used to craft the record $56 billion annual budget. Massachusetts students will receive sex and health education that is intended to be more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community and teach about bodily autonomy, mental and emotional health, dating safety, nutrition, sexually transmitted infections and consent, after a board of education vote on Tuesday. "It's also the case that we are fiscally very strong here in Massachusetts," the governor continued. "We have a terrific bond rating. We have a record amount in the stabilization fund. And we're going to just have to plan and evaluate as we prepare our next budget. That's what we're going to do, we're going to manage the situation." We offer unique, ongoing coverage of news from the panel that interviews and approves judicial nominees. The News Service started just before the turn of the century when one member of the press corps began copying every session of the House and Senate (in pencil) and selling the copies to other reporters, so they wouldn't have to attend every moment. From that start the service, under several names, has added full wire-service coverage at a good price to news organizations and other clients.
Overly optimistic revenue estimates are partly to blame for uprooting the budget that House and Senate Democrats drew up for fiscal 2024, causing Healey in January to reach for spending cuts and new revenues as part of a major midyear budget-balancing act. Since then, the governor has imposed hiring controls as an added effort to control spending. House Democrats were united in their support of the bill while there were divisions within the 25-member House Republican caucus, where four members voted against the budget. The budget does not call for tax increases, seeks to push overall state spending up by about 3.3%, or $2 billion, and aims to drive up the state rainy day fund balance to nearly $9 billion.

Five people were killed in a crash in Littlerock Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said. The Democrat-only passage of the shelter funding deal drew quick rebukes from conservatives at the Mass. A man was found dead in a South Los Angeles home on Sunday after firefighters extinguished a blaze on the property. State Auditor Diana DiZoglio said she was in her office counting previous audits of the Legislature with her team when they heard the fire alarm go off on Tuesday afternoon, following the other fire alarm activation earlier in the day. But they also delivered Healey the second-latest annual budget since fiscal 2002 and the second-latest closeout budget since the turn of the millennium. Legislative leaders spent long stretches of the year publicly sparring over how to advance gun-related legislation — not so much the substance of the actual reforms — and the joint committee process. Healey spoke generally about her desire for action to make child care less expensive, calling it an "economic imperative" in the business community, but on Wednesday she did not repeat her inaugural endorsement of the Common Start proposal itself. Healey pointed out that "we do have new revenue" coming in from the voter-approved surtax on high earners, which is designed to be earmarked just for education and transportation uses. The Department of Revenue estimated last week that the surtax will generate between $1.58 billion and $2.06 billion in revenue this fiscal year, significantly more than the $1 billion allocated in the state budget.
"And whatever else comes up along the way, but those are a couple of the things that I know are gonna take my time next week," Mariano said. After Friday's vote, Mariano mentioned efforts by top House Democrats to hold new spending down next fiscal year. The Department of Revenue this week is scheduled to release tax collection data for April, a critical month for receipts, and Michlewitz said those numbers will be a "big determining factor in how we handle the remainder of the fiscal year." "We want to be cautious, but also want to be able to do the local investments as well that we have done in the past as much as we possibly could," Michlewitz told reporters after the vote. Representatives tacked on less spending via amendments than they did to last year's budget, and a shade less than the $108.5 million average between fiscal years 2022 and 2024 as calculated by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. After session, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Aaron Michlewitz defended the mostly behind-closed-doors approach, saying there are "many different processes," including one-on-one meetings and off-floor discussions, that representatives go through to advocate for their priorities during the budget's development.

As part of an effort to clamp shelter spending, negotiators opted for a new nine-month limit on how long families can stay in the emergency assistance program in the compromise... Later this week, Gov. Maura Healey will sign an executive order that will prohibit state agencies from buying single-use plastic bottles effective immediately, a step that she said Massachusetts will be the first state in the nation to take and one that the Legislature has repeatedly declined to take over the last decade. House Speaker Ron Mariano is "still searching for some answers" about the scope of the fast-changing emergency shelter crisis, while Gov. Maura Healey on Tuesday delivered another impassioned plea for federal aid that she acknowledged so far has not been forthcoming. Vulnerable workers, including immigrants who don't know their rights or are fearful of employer retaliation, could gain stronger protections against pervasive wage theft under legislation that is supported by the state's top prosecutor and Gov. Maura Healey but has failed to win over Democrats on Beacon Hill for years. Legislators representing marginalized communities and diverse medical leaders touted comprehensive health equity bills as a solution to overcoming long-standing racial disparities during a hearing Wednesday, though insurers warned the bill's passage could lead to higher costs for patients and employers. Business organizations that collectively represent more than 10,000 employers in Massachusetts and one million employees are echoing calls from top state officials for the federal government to take action and make more migrants eligible to work.

Construction began in 1926 on a house with sandstone exterior walls and a traditional slate roof. For two years post-construction, the house was fitted with fireplaces from English manor houses and antique wood paneling. The home became the family’s residence in 1929, where the Fords’ children, Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William, were raised. The naturalistic grounds of the estate on Lake St. Clair include a power house, a gatehouse with two apartments and an eight car garage, a recreation or pool house, and a completely fitted child’s playhouse. Coming in spring 2020, Ford House will open a brand new visitor center and administration building, currently under construction. Located in Highland Park northeast of Downtown LA, Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California during its first 100 years of statehood.

Come along with SEGD as we visit the historic Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. It was built from 1961 to 1963 It was built as a cave-like dwelling that embraces nature. I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. The project is to reduce the impact of waves and flooding, reduce polluted runoff and nutrient loads and increase recreational fishing opportunities. It also is to increase public access to the inaccessible shoreline for future educational and recreational activities, according to a Ford House release.
Senior Adventurers group resumes trips with visit to Edsel and Eleanor Ford House
Discover the inspiration of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, where picturesque architecture surrounded by beautiful landscapes takes you inside the story one of America’s most prominent automotive families. Edsel Ford – the only son of Henry and Clara Ford – became president of Ford Motor Company in 1919 at the age of 25. We started in one of the gorgeous gardens at the Ford House before meandering through their favorite areas of the property. Bailey and Fred live nearby and they enjoy evening strolls through the property on a regular basis. I always love when couples choose a location for their engagement session that resonates on a personal level.
You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. The Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22) was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and built in 1959. Perched in the Hollywood hills above the city, the Stahl House is an icon of Mid-Century Modern architecture.
(To this day English workers are brought in to make repairs.) The same craftsmen installed the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century paneling and other architectural details culled by the Fords from old English manors. The library was designed around seventeenth-century oak paneling and a Caen stone chimneypiece from Deene Park, while eighteenth-century pine paneling from Spitalfields was seamlessly installed in the morning room. The house contains elements from six English estates, including a circa 1600 staircase from Lyvedon Old Bield Manor in Northamptonshire.
Two fifth-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the resident students change every year. Movie fans will recognize the house as Doc Brown’s mansion from the Back to the Future movie trilogy. The Gamble House is designated as California Historical Landmark #871 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926. The house is known for its unique design and colorful history.
In September 2006, the Eames House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. It was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #381 in July 1988. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available.
The Best Things to do for Christmas in Los Angeles
In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site. Having been the residence of the Schindlers and then other creatives, this WeHo hidden gem is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday as an architectural center. The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932.
The rooms were all connected together, Jack and Jill style. The governess’ room was located between the youngest boys’ rooms. Edsel II’s room featured more modern decor including a table with a built-in radio and a modern bathroom. During your visit to Ford House, experience an extraordinary meal with a beautiful view of Lake St. Clair!
Jensen's son was contracted later on to install the new garden area which has a reflecting pool and does not have the natural stylizing of the rest of the grounds. Instead he opted for finely trimmed bushes and square grassy areas. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games.
In the 1930s, Edsel hired famed industrial designer and Ford Motor Company collaborator Walter Dorwin Teague to redecorate four rooms. Teague created rich and original designs using a sleek, modern Machine-Age aesthetic. Later in the 1950s after Edsel’s passing, Eleanor hired friend and interior decorator Polly Jessup to design spaces that reflected her taste and highlighted her collection of fine art and antique furniture. The house was designed by prominent architect Albert Kahn, known for his work on several iconic structures in Detroit and industrial design in Ford Motor Co. factories. The look of Edsel and Eleanor’s house was inspired by Cotswold-style cottages in England.
Los Angeles is known around the world for its masterpieces of residential architecture. Famous fans of these landmark designs include Ice Cube and Moby. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle. That was epic and a long time dream of mine to see inside this historic lloyd wright house.
One hidden passage led to the garage area where Edsel Ford went to meet his chauffeured transportation. On some occasions he traveled in his boat to get to the Ford Rouge Plant. He dug a channel and used the sand to create Bird Island, which attracts migrating birds and has a path for viewers. The library on the first floor was the family room for the Fords.
Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. The Avila Adobe is LA’s oldest house still standing in its original location, and is designated as California Historic Landmark #145. Originally built in 1818 by Francisco José Avila, it has since been the home to many of his family members and descendants. It even served as military headquarters in the late 1840s.
